Gorman Electrical Services was appointed as the electrical contractor for the full rewire of a new Hillbillies restaurant in Donaghmede. This was a full BCAR (Building Control Amendment Regulations) job, meaning GES was responsible not just for the installation but also for the design of the fire alarm systems, emergency lighting layout, general socket positions, and general lighting scheme — all of which had to be submitted and certified under the BCAR process.
The Challenge
A BCAR project carries a higher level of responsibility than a standard commercial fit out. The electrical contractor must demonstrate that every fire safety system has been designed to the relevant Irish and European standards, and the design documentation must be available for inspection at any point during or after the build. The restaurant's kitchen required emergency stop switches at specific locations to allow immediate power disconnection to cooking equipment in the event of a fire — these had to be coordinated with the kitchen equipment supplier and the ventilation contractor.
Our Solution
We produced full design drawings for the fire alarm system, emergency lighting, general lighting, and socket layouts before any work began on site. The fire alarm system was designed and installed to IS 3218 with appropriate detector heads for the kitchen environment (heat detectors in cooking areas, smoke detectors elsewhere). Emergency stop switches were installed at the kitchen entry point and at the main distribution board, linked to the kitchen extract system. Access control was installed on staff-only areas and the rear delivery entrance. Data cabling was run to all POS terminals and back-office workstations.
The Result
The project was completed and signed off under the BCAR process with all design documentation submitted and certified. The restaurant opened with full fire safety compliance, a functioning access control system, and a robust electrical installation designed to support the demands of a busy hospitality kitchen.
