Should you choose a tethered or untethered home charger? A Dublin electrician compares convenience, cost, security, and durability to help you pick the right option for your driveway.
One of the first decisions you'll make when choosing a home EV charger is whether to go tethered or untethered. It seems like a small detail, but it affects your daily experience, the charger's durability, and even security. Having installed both types hundreds of times across Dublin, here's what actually matters.
What's the Difference?
A tethered charger has a cable permanently attached to the unit — you just grab the cable and plug it into your car. An untethered charger has a socket on the front — you use the Type 2 cable that came with your car (or buy a separate one), plug one end into the charger and the other into your car.
| Feature | Tethered | Untethered |
|---|---|---|
| Cable | Permanently attached (5–7m) | Use your own Type 2 cable |
| Convenience | Grab and plug — one step | Fetch cable, plug both ends — two steps |
| Cost (GES) | From €850 | From €750 |
| Best for | Daily use, families, rainy driveways | Multi-car households, security-conscious |
| Appearance | Cable holster on unit | Clean, minimal look |
| Cable longevity | Outdoor exposure, potential wear | Cable stored indoors, protected |
When to Choose Tethered
Most of our Dublin customers go with a tethered charger, and for good reason. The convenience factor is hard to beat — especially in Irish weather. You walk out, grab the cable from the holster, and plug in. No rummaging in the boot for a cable, no coiling and uncoiling, no dragging a cable across a wet driveway.
Tethered chargers are the better choice if:
- You charge every day or most days — the grab-and-plug convenience adds up
- Multiple family members use the charger — no cable to forget or misplace
- Your charger is exposed to weather — one fewer connection point means one fewer point of water ingress
- You have solar panels — tethered chargers with solar diversion (like the Zappi) are easier to use when the cable is always ready
When to Choose Untethered
Untethered chargers have their own advantages, and they're the right choice in specific situations:
- You have a narrow driveway or tight space — no cable hanging from the unit means a cleaner installation
- Security is a concern — the cable is stored inside your home, so it can't be tampered with or stolen
- You own multiple EVs with different connector types — an untethered charger works with any Type 2 cable
- You prefer a minimalist appearance — untethered chargers look sleeker on the wall
- You want maximum cable life — storing the cable indoors protects it from UV, rain, and frost
What About Smart and Solar-Ready Chargers?
Both our smart charger (€1,050) and solar-ready Zappi (€1,350) are available in tethered variants. The smart charger adds app control, scheduling, and load balancing — ideal for night-rate charging. The Zappi adds solar energy diversion on top of smart features. If you want smart or solar features, tethered is the more popular choice because the cable is always ready for automated and scheduled charging sessions.
Cable Length and Your Driveway
Tethered chargers typically come with 5–7 metres of cable. Before choosing, measure the distance from where the charger will be mounted to where your car's charge port sits when parked. Remember that charge port locations vary by manufacturer — Tesla is rear-left, Volkswagen ID models are rear-right, Hyundai is front-left. Make sure the cable reaches comfortably without stretching across the car.
During your free site survey, our electrician will check cable reach from the proposed charger location to your car's charge port position. If it's tight, we'll suggest moving the mounting point.
Durability in Irish Weather
Both tethered and untethered chargers are rated IP65 — meaning they're weatherproof and designed for outdoor use. The main durability difference is the cable itself. On a tethered charger, the cable is permanently outside, exposed to rain, UV, and temperature swings year-round. This does cause gradual wear over time — typically the connector holster and cable sheathing are the first to show age.
With an untethered charger, you store the cable indoors after each use, protecting it from the elements. This can extend cable life significantly — but it does mean an extra step every time you charge.
Our Recommendation
For the majority of Dublin homeowners who charge daily and want the simplest experience, go tethered. The €100 price difference over untethered is worth it for the convenience alone. If security, aesthetics, or a tight driveway are your priority, go untethered — you won't sacrifice any charging performance.
